School might be out for summer, but class will be in session for the Dames. They’ll pounce on all opportunities to gain new skills from guest coaches and clinics such as Roller Con and Beat Me Halfway.

The Dames will also get a visit their long-time friend and mentor, Jackie Daniels, as a guest coach in mid-June. Jackie has multiple awards and credits to her name, including Windy City Rollers All-Star MVP of the Year and two-time League MVP.

“Jackie is about as big of a deal as it gets in derby,” said Crissy Crossbones, Uproar skater and Head of Training. “We are very lucky to have a great relationship with her. She’s a Team USA skater, captain of the Texecutioners, and was featured in the movie Whip It.”

Dames Show Ultimate Sportsmanship at the 2016 K-Town Shakedown Tournament
Uproar and Onslaught teams played in their biggest tournament ever April 29-May 1, 2016, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, at the 2016 K-Town Shakedown Tournament.

“Sportswomanship and classiness trumps all,” said Uproar captain Squid Pro Quo. “Win or lose, being on team with people you love where you can be your goofiest self is the best feeling.”

Each team competed three times over the intense three-day tournament. Uproar played Border City Brawlers (Windsor, Canada, ranked 206); San Fernando Valley Roller Derby, (California, ranked 93); and Cornfed Derby Dames (Muncie, Indiana, ranked 115). These were all teams Uproar had never played before.

Onslaught matched up against the hosting team, Killamazoo Derby Darlins Kill Squad (Kalamazoo, Michigan) and Brewcity Bruisers Battlestars (Milwaukee, Wisconsin). They also took on a tough bout against the Ann Arbor Derby Dimes Arbor Bruising Company (Michigan).

Shakedown Day One
Uproar exceeded their 3 to 1 odds against the Border City Brawlers on day one, delivering powerful hits consistently and keeping their defenses strong. Uproar won 315-92. Onslaught, though outranked by Ann Arbor Derby Dimes, had a photo finish ending to their first bout. Lead jammer Give ’Em L jumped the apex and called off the last jam—getting her team out of double-digits with 101 points. Final score, 101–378, Ann Arbor.

Shakedown Day Two
Onslaught came back early and killed the Killa Squad, winning 330–93. That evening, Uproar was matched against the San Fernando Valley Roller Derby. The two evenly matched teams fought point for point, but, ultimately, San Fernando won 168–133.

Shakedown Day Three
Onslaught danced and laughed their way into the hearts of the crowd. They played strong, but succumbed to the intoxicating force of the Brewcity Bruisers with a final score of 331–51.

“The biggest takeaway is that attitude is everything,” said Onslaught captain Pastore. “A loss can still be a win if we meet our smaller goals and have fun doing it. Positivity made this weekend special from start to finish.”

Spirits soared back again as Uproar poured out positive energy and powerful defensive blocking against the Cornfed Derby Dames. Early on, Cornfed looked ready to overtake the Dames’ head start, but the Dames rallied before halftime, streaking ahead 110 to 65 at the half. The Cornfed Derby Dames came back and won, final score, 189–172.

DuPage Derby Dames 2016 Season: Ready for the Take Down

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Public Relations Contact:
Holly Vossel, aka Hollydaze, Head of Public Relations
publicrelations@dupagederbydames.com

On Saturday, March 12, the DuPage Derby Dames speed onto their home track in a double header against the Peoria Push Derby Dames and Fort Wayne Derby Girls.

The 79th-ranked Fort Wayne Derby Girls’ Bomb Squad of Indiana have plans to rain devastation on the Dames’ Uproar, ranked 90th worldwide. But taking down big game is exactly what this pack of fierce competitors intends to do throughout their entire 2016 season.

The Dames plan to climb the rankings of Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) by building relationships with new teams they haven’t played and facing more challenging opponents like Fort Wayne this year. Uproar is striving to make the Division 2 WFTDA playoffs in 2017. This is the year the Dames will lay the groundwork and fight for that opportunity!

The league has built strength from within by empowering their skaters with important decisions such as roster building. They’ve also sent skaters to clinics such as Roller Con and Beat Me Halfway to bring back new skills to the league.

More tournament play is also part of the Dames’ season strategy. They’re excited to bring some Illinois pride to K-Town Shakedown 2016 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, this April. Be a part of the Dames’ journey by joining in their festive fundraising efforts. Any donation will help fund skaters’ travel costs to K-Town Shakedown 2016. As an added bonus, donations are tax deductible since the DuPage Derby Dames are a 501(c)(3) organization!

Additional fundraising will take place with some Dames’ March Madness spirit on Wednesday, March 16. Buffalo Wild Wings® Bloomingdale and Lombard locations will donate 10% of all pre-taxed sales from any guest who mentions the DuPage Derby Dames’ fundraiser. Visit their locations at 140 S. Gary Ave., Stratford Crossing, Bloomingdale or 207 Roosevelt Rd. in Lombard, with sales starting at 11:00 a.m. and remember to say, “Oh Hot Dame!”

The support of Dames’ fans keeps the league thriving—it’s the roll in their wheels and the inspiration that fuels them to try even harder in competition. Fans can donate at https://www.generosity.com/sports-fundraising/dupage-derby-dames-go-to-k... to send the team to tournment glory, plus receive sweet derby swag. The league is pumped to make their fans proud at K-Town Shakedown 2016!

“We have practiced for this. We are ready. We have the heart. I can’t ask for anything more from our players.” (Betty Bunz, Onslaught Captain)

“As a skater, I’m looking forward to K-Town Shakedown because it’s our first top 100 tournament, meaning the competition will be stiff and no matter what happens, we’ll walk away with a great deal of experience against higher ranked teams and skills to work on for next year. As Head of Training, I’m prepping our team by sticking to the fundamentals: defense and offense, and how to switch seamlessly from one to the other when necessary.” (Crissy Crossbones, Uproar skater, Head of Training)

The Dames’ goals for greatness extends into their community work. Their volunteer efforts with the People’s Resource Center, a local charity, help provide food, clothing, and shelter for those in need. These smiling skaters bring the same energy and passion to stocking food pantries and dishing out meals that they do when dishing out big hits on the track.

It all begins with the must-see season opener March 12. Tickets are $12 at the door or $10 in advance: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2507802. Kids 8 and under are free. Must be 21+ to purchase alcohol.

Don’t miss your chance to witness the start of roller derby history in the making! Check out the full season schedule at https://dupagederbydames.com/schedule.
